About cadastral surveying

Cadastral surveying focuses on land ownership laws and property boundary definitions. It involves determining boundary locations, land ownership status, and property rights, restrictions, and interests, and recording this information for plans and maps. This includes physically marking property boundaries and determining dimensions, areas, and rights, whether on land, water, or defined by natural or artificial features.

Cadastral surveys subdivide land into parcels for ownership and re-establish boundaries to determine ownership extents or facilitate property title transfers.

Only a licensed surveyor, registered under the Surveying Act 2004, can perform cadastral surveys in Victoria. This regulation highlights the government's commitment to maintaining Victoria's cadastre, a system of property administration. The cadastre consists of parcel boundaries and public records of rights, restrictions, and responsibilities. Licensed surveyors ensure the cadastre's integrity, supporting economic development and property market confidence
